AMC 8, AMC 10 or AMC 12?
Three separate contests, taken on different days. Pick by grade level, not by how much you have studied: the AMC 8 is for grade 8 and below, the AMC 10 for grade 10 and below, and the AMC 12 for grade 12 and below.

The AMC 10 and the AMC 12 share a format: 75 minutes, 25 multiple-choice questions, no calculator. The AMC 8 is 40 minutes. The AMC 12 covers the whole high-school curriculum except calculus: trigonometry, logarithms and exponentials, complex numbers, polynomials, sequences and series, conic sections, vectors, and advanced counting and probability.
Both the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 qualify students for the AIME. The AMC 10 path leads on to the USAJMO, the AMC 12 path to the USAMO. A student may sit both the A and the B administration, but not an AMC 10 and an AMC 12 in the same administration.
